HAWL DIRECTORS / DIRECTORS AT LARGE

HAWL Committee Chairs

HAWL would like to thank Professor and Dean Emeritus Bruce Jacob of Stetson University College of Law for addressing the membership at our May 14, 2014 meeting. Dean Jacob discussed the United States Supreme Court's recent decision, Schuette v. Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action, 134 S. Ct. 1623 (2014), in which the Court held that the Judiciary did not have authority under the United States Constitution to set aside a state constitutional amendment prohibiting affirmative action in public education, employment, and contracting.

Dean Jacob advised that many state lawmakers will leverage this ruling to support the passage of legislation to prohibit race-sensitive admissions policies, which, to date, have had some success in advancing the cause of racial equality and diversity.
